Penetrating damp occurs when exterior masonry becomes porous. Examples include defective pointing, damaged or ineffective rainwater goods, and cracks in the exterior render-work or porous brickwork.
To prevent water from penetrating the wall, action must be taken to correct the fault. These include re-pointing of walls, repair or replacement of water goods, sealing or replacing render or applying waterproof sealant to the wall. Internally contaminated plaster is removed, penetrating damp can track into adjacent walls. The wall is then salt neutralised if required. The wall is sand and cement rendered, waterproofed and salt inhibited. Thermal plaster boards are then installed if required. Finish plaster is then applied.
